Changing Dynamics of the Automotive Industry

The Indian automobile industry has been undergoing a transformational phase in recent years, and the pace of change is only set to accelerate in the coming years. The industry has been impacted by several factors such as evolving consumer preferences, changing regulatory environment, and the advent of new technologies. As a result, the industry is set to witness a significant shift in the next few years, with growth and volume numbers for 2022-23 likely to reflect this changing landscape.

The most notable trend in the Indian automobile industry is the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs). The government's push towards clean mobility and the increasing availability of affordable EVs has been driving this trend. According to industry estimates, the EV market in India is expected to grow at a CAGR of 44% between 2020 and 2026. In 2022-23, EVs are expected to account for around 5-7% of total vehicle sales in the country.

Another significant trend is the increasing popularity of connected and autonomous vehicles. The development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and the growing adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have made connected and autonomous vehicles a reality. In 2022-23, the sales of connected and autonomous vehicles in India are expected to grow at a CAGR of around 25-30%.

Apart from these, the Indian automobile industry is also witnessing a significant transformation in the commercial vehicle segment. The growing demand for last-mile connectivity and e-commerce logistics has led to an increased demand for small commercial vehicles (SCVs) and light commercial vehicles (LCVs). In 2022-23, the sales of SCVs and LCVs are expected to grow at a CAGR of around 12-15%.

Overall, the Indian automobile industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 8-10% in 2022-23. The passenger vehicle segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 6-8%, while the commercial vehicle segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 10-12%. In terms of volume, the total vehicle sales in India are expected to reach around 4.5-5 million units in 2022-23.

In conclusion, the Indian automobile industry is undergoing a significant transformation, with a shift towards EVs, connected and autonomous vehicles, and the growing demand for SCVs and LCVs. These trends are likely to drive growth and volume numbers for 2022-23 and beyond, making India one of the most exciting markets for the automobile industry in the world.
